(Our SCC has graciously agreed to provide periodic updates to this blog as a way to keep our community in the loop of the many goings on they are involved with – thanks to our chair, Marlene Jackson, for starting us off. MP)
Hello from the Argyle School Community Council (SCC)!
We wanted to update you on this school year’s happenings with the Argyle SCC. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the SCC, we are a group of parents who meet monthly with Mr. Panko and other teachers to discuss ways we can help enhance the school community. Although you may associate the SCC with the “F word” (“Fundraising”), we are so much more!
We typically meet the first Monday of the month starting at 6:30 PM in the school library. We try to wrap things up by 8:00 PM. All interested parents are invited to attend. You can attend a meeting with no strings attached -we promise not to rope you into anything unwillingly! What you will find is an opportunity to find out what is happening at the school, which will no doubt help you feel more connected to your child’s experience at Argyle. The meetings are actually a lot of fun (feel free to come out and see for yourself!). We also provide complimentary child care during the meeting, offered by our Grade 7/8 students. A sincere thanks to the students who have registered as potential babysitters – we are grateful for your help!
We set a plan last June which includes trying to host one “community building” event each month of the school calendar. Some examples that have already taken place this year include the welcome back potluck in September (thanks to all who contributed and attended!), the Fall Dance in October, the indoor games night in November and the Hot Chocolate Social following the Winter Concert.
This month we are pleased to host a “Books before Bedtime” reading event, scheduled for Thursday, February 11th, starting at 6:30 PM. We hope you will come join us for a family-friendly event which will include opportunities to read from dual-language books, explore online options such as Raz Kids, and experience fun word games. There will be something for all ages! No cost to attend! We hope to see you there.
We also are hosting a “Family Gym Day” each Sunday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 in the Argyle gym. Although our weather has been warmer than typical, please consider coming out with your child(ren) to enjoy floor hockey, basketball, and other fun games. No cost to attend!
We’d also like to update you on some of the things we have supported financially this year. We have funded the “Mathletics” program for all grades, and have supported purchasing various literacy material (such as leveled reading books). We also provided the bus transportation for the Winter Concert rehearsals at Sheldon. We are hopeful to make a decision soon to purchase some equipment (technology) to assist the teachers in the classroom. Stay tuned for more details once a decision has been made. It is through fundraising efforts such as our QSP magazine sale last fall that we are able to provide this financial support to the school. Thank you to everyone who participated in the QSP sale.
We are in the process of planning a variety of events to thank our wonderful Argyle staff during “Staff Appreciation Week”, February 8-12. If you are interested in hearing what we have planned, please email argylescc@gmail.com or text 3065291684. There are a couple of things planned that we could use some assistance from volunteers. We look forward to showing our awesome staff how much we appreciate what they do for our children every day.
If you have any suggestions for things you’d like to see the Argyle SCC focus on for the remainder of the school year, please consider coming to a meeting to share your ideas, or drop us an email. We welcome your input!
